Pay it forward by voluntering brings healing
Before the pandemic, I volunteered at the American Cancer Society, fitting customers with donated wigs at Northwell Hospital in New Hyde Park, NY. My motivation stemmed from a personal place—I had just gotten divorced and, without my children, was only allowed visitation on specific days. This new, lonely place left me with time I didn’t know how to fill. Helping others became my way of filling that gap and healing my own pain. Many of the patients thanked me for my kindness, but the truth is, they healed me more than they could ever imagine.
In life, we all face struggles. You can either dwell in your misery or strive to make a difference in someone else’s life. Acts of kindness towards others can mend your own heart, serving as a healthy distraction. I encourage everyone to volunteer, whether at an animal shelter, a local church, or a hospital. The rewards are immeasurable.
Since the pandemic, wig fittings at Northwell Hospital have been put on hold. However, just a week ago, a woman came to my store and donated half a dozen wigs. This generous act inspired me to continue doing what I love most—helping others feel beautiful and confident.
